Kurulugala Entrance sits at around 1,000 metres elevation, 12.8 km from Deniyaya. The trails here are quieter and less visited, excellent for unhurried nature walks and hikes through primary forest at elevation. The mixed-species bird waves at Kurulugala are among the most spectacular in Asia and the cooler temperatures make for comfortable walking throughout the day. This is the entrance for guests who want fewer people and more forest.

Pitadeniya Entrance is the main established entrance with well-maintained trails and consistent wildlife sightings across birds, reptiles, mammals, and flora. It suits guests on their first visit to Sinharaja who want a broad experience of what the forest holds across all wildlife groups.

Lankagama Entrance is known for its waterfalls and the trails here offer a different character from the other two entrances. For guests who want to combine wildlife with the experience of Sinharaja’s rivers and cascades, Lankagama is the natural choice.

What You May Encounter

Reptiles are the heart of the day tour experience in Sinharaja. The forest holds an extraordinary concentration of endemic species, many of them found nowhere else on earth, and the slow, attentive pace of a day tour is exactly what reptile encounters demand.

The Green Pit Viper is one of the most beautiful animals in the forest. Perfectly camouflaged and completely still, it rests coiled on low branches over streams, often at eye level, in a position it may hold for hours. Most visitors only see one because Achi knows where to look.

At ground level, the Sri Lanka Kangaroo Lizard moves through the leaf litter in short bursts, pausing motionless between movements in a way that makes it almost invisible until it moves again. It is one of the most characterful reptiles in the forest and a reliable encounter on most day tours.

The Hump-nosed Lizard sits still on mossy branches and trunks, relying on camouflage in the same way the Pit Viper does at lower levels.
